What happens in psychosexual therapy?

A specialist form of talking therapy exploring sex, sexuality, intimacy and sexual wellbeing.

Our experiences can be influenced by relationships, physical health, medication, stress, body image, emotions and the past. Therapy offers a space to explore what may be happening for you, without judgement or assumptions.

Talking about sex can feel daunting, particularly if you’ve never had the opportunity to speak about it openly. Psychosexual therapy is a talking therapy, and you will not be asked to engage in sexual activity during a session.

Sessions are collaborative and conversational. We can take time to understand what is happening, find language that feels comfortable and explore what you would like to change or understand differently.

Depending on your needs, therapy may include structured psychosexual exercises or therapeutic activities to explore between sessions. These are discussed collaboratively and are never something you are expected to undertake before you feel ready.

Who is psychosexual therapy for?

You may consider psychosexual therapy if a change in your sexual functioning or desire is causing you distress, frustration, uncertainty or concern.

You don’t need to have a diagnosis or know exactly what’s happening. You may be experiencing a change, struggling to understand something, or simply looking for support.

Psychosexual therapy can take place individually, as a couple, or with partners within different relationship structures.

Where more than one person is involved, we agree together how the therapy will work and what confidentiality will look like for everyone involved.

Where we begin

Your first session is a chance to talk about what’s brought you here, in whatever way feels comfortable.

You don’t need to have the right words or know exactly where to begin. We can take our time and work it out together.
